“The baby soldier frogs are about to undergo a special rehabilitation programme: they will be trapped in a bag and flown to mainland Europe,” said Patricia Abrahams, a conservation officer at Nyneka National Forest.

Joking about its name, she said: “We are telling people to hang in and see what else we have in store for them.”

The two frogs were found on state forest grounds, at the same location where several French tourists found two beluga whales dead in December. Two Poles discovered them too.

Some of the frogs were stranded by a fallen tree. Others were laid in snow and buried by snow that melted beneath them, having grown an hour or so over that time. But the babies made it to their parents.

The number of rare forest frogs has declined by up to a third in Slovenia over the past two decades, after habitat loss and the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, known as Dutch Black Death.
