TV Cleaning Devices: 10 products that can polish your telly

(CNN) — Experts across the world can agree: if you think that hair brushes hold up to human use, you’re wrong.

But there’s one scenario that even they can’t agree on: how to clean your TV.

While certain professionals recommend a vacuum, others suggest dusting or spraying it with a gunk-fighting liquid, while still others say you have to clear the grill.

“It’s really a matter of personal preference,” said Mordy Schofield of Smart A/V at Makers of Engines & Appliances in Liverpool, England. “But don’t wipe your air con with it.”

“For any television cleaning product you’re going to have to [clean] with a product that allows you to get to as much as possible.

“You can’t just skim and sweep — you’ve got to use a roll that’s going to go down the whole screen and really be a penetrator into where the dirt is,” he said.

Make sure the brush is sharp, too

To clean with a brush, the bristles are usually made from copper and have been coated with a tough coating that ‘smells’ dead fish. This ensures it stays sharp, Schofield said.

“Most TVs you’ll see from manufacturers to older consumer TVs, they all come with a copper or stainless steel brush. That’s usually the most commonly used product.”

“It’s best if you get one from the same manufacturer and brand as your TV and brand of AV equipment.”

It can even remove even the toughest stains — just as long as it’s done properly.

“If it’s done properly, you can, from a cleaning perspective, remove even the toughest stains — especially if you’ve got a good washing machine,” he said.

Do you know what to do with your TV?

If you choose to use a brush instead of the usual can opener or your bare hands, you should ensure that it is professional quality.

“Unless you’ve got some expertise to do it — and you don’t — be aware that any product on the market that claims to remove dirt will only be able to remove dirt if it has been professionally cleaned,” he said.

Schofield recommends using brands such as Mastergear, Power Jet and XT.
