The World’s Tastiest Cheese Award , launched in Switzerland in 1996, has been judged the world’s greatest cheese festival.
Launched with the likes of Hummel cheese, this year the festival celebrated the winners in their various categories — silver, bronze and gold.
Ancient tradition
Formerly known as the International Cheese Prize , the World’s Tastiest Cheese Award initially began as a tongue-in-cheek attempt to beat the “German nose” at their own game.
“My grandmother used to give me a Hummel every Christmas, but everyone else in Switzerland was asking me how to eat it,” says prize founder Franz Mixer.
It took just a few years to accept other awards from the Cheese and Sausage Federation in Austria and the Astershed.
With the number of judges increasing and the number of entries increasing on average by more than 20%, the awards has been able to define the “best” of cheeses.
